Elan Med Spa in Fayetteville, North Carolina, was established in 2013 to provide medical and aesthetic services. Its owner, Mary Lee Cudd, has 30 years of experience as a certified physician assistant. The services provided at Elan include BOTOX® and XEOMIN® injections, dermal fillers, laser tattoo removal and permanent makeup. If you are considering a treatment like microblading to fill out your eyebrows, our specialist can help you decide if permanent makeup may be better suited to you.
What is Permanent Makeup?
Permanent makeup is a process in which pigment is placed just beneath the skin in places where people often wear conventional make-up. It is most commonly used on the lips, brows and eyelids. It is also sometimes accurately called “cosmetic tattooing.”
Our specialist uses a tattoo pen to inject permanent ink directly below the epidermis in a process called micropigmentation. We will use a local anesthetic to numb the area beforehand. The treatment typically takes no more than 20 minutes to complete and can last for up to five years.
Is There a Difference Between Permanent Makeup and Microblading?
Microblading is actually a type of permanent makeup, which also makes it a type of tattooing. It differs from other types of permanent makeup in that it is strictly a technique used on the eyebrows. It is also semi-permanent rather than permanent and lasts one to three years.
Another difference is that microblading is intended to create the illusion that the patient has moderate to thick brow hairs, while other kinds of permanent makeup are designed to look like makeup. In microblading, the aesthetician uses a blade composed of tiny needles that deposit pigment just under the skin. They make curved strokes to match those of the client’s existing brows. Similarly, they will use pigment that either matches the existing brows or at least suits the client’s skin tone and hair color. Microblading can be used to fill in scanty or thin brows, or it can replace brows that are missing altogether.
Why Would Someone Want Permanent Makeup or Microblading?
Cosmetic tattoos can help people with the following problems:
• Hair loss caused by chemotherapy, burns, certain diseases or surgery • Disabilities like arthritis or impaired vision that make it difficult for the patient to apply makeup • Allergies or skin sensitivities that react badly to conventional make-up
